Stepping Tones
Stepping Tones
This project centres on a bold reworking of levels to transform a once-cramped and disconnected lower ground floor into a warm, spatially rich interior. The key move was the complete redesign of the staircase, which was opened up to the floor above, introducing a dramatic vertical form that immediately expands the sense of volume and connection across levels.
The interiors were stripped back to reveal the building’s raw fabric. Bare brick walls were exposed and painted, bringing texture and depth, while original timber joists and a new steel frame were left visible to emphasise the honesty of the structure. These industrial elements are balanced by the generous use of natural materials. Oak is used throughout for stair treads, joinery and the bespoke kitchen, lending warmth and tactility to the space.
The lower ground floorplan was opened up into a fluid kitchen, dining and living area, designed around framed views to a newly reimagined garden. A two-level terrace, one sunken and one raised, draws light deep into the plan and establishes a much stronger visual and spatial connection to the outdoors.
Every detail, from the integrated furniture to the finely finished stair junctions, was designed to enhance the flow and feeling of generosity within the compact footprint. The result is a calm, characterful space that feels at once grounded, expressive and deeply connected to its surroundings.
“The Stylus team brought great design ideas and challenged ours to get us a fantastic end result. The space has been utterly transformed and we adore it.”

Design Concept
The design explores volume and connection by opening up the lower ground floor and introducing a dramatic central staircase, creating a sense of flow and light throughout the space. Early 3D visualisations articulated the concept and set the vison for the project.
A Celebration of Craft
Rather than relying on dramatic interventions, this project brings the space to life through considered detailing and subtle contrasts in material and texture. Exposed internal brick walls and a new steel frame introduce a refined industrial edge, while the interplay of warm oak, painted timber joists, and smooth stone surfaces adds tactility and softness. The design demonstrates that even the raw, structural elements of a home can be celebrated, proving that thoughtful composition and craftsmanship can elevate modest, often hidden parts of a building.
The Transformation
The lower ground floor has been completely transformed from a low, cramped, and disconnected space into a bright, open, and calm environment. Natural light, exposed structure, and carefully chosen materials create a fluid, functional, and inviting heart of the home.
A Thoughtful Kitchen
The kitchen, designed by Stylus Architects, is crafted from oak and features a bespoke handleless design, creating a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Slim shadow gaps accentuate the precision of the joinery, allowing the space to feel refined, uncluttered, and seamlessly integrated into the lower ground floor.
A Journey Through Levels
The movement between levels is defined by a series of distinctive stair designs and carefully integrated internal and external steps. This key element gives the project a strong and recognisable identity. Natural light spills down through the staircases from a strategically placed rooflight above, enhancing the sense of movement and spatial connection. A sunken garden and upper terrace extend the living spaces outward, creating a close relationship with the landscape. The glazed box extension further reinforces this connection, allowing light and views to flow seamlessly between inside and out.
